Leuzinger finds joy in greenhouses

HAMPSHIRE – Jeff Leuzinger describes himself as a third generation horticulturist.

His grandfather owned a greenhouse in Mendota and his father was a golf course superintendent and now teaches horticulture at Kishwaukee College.

Growing up in the greenhouse and on the golf course, Leuzinger found a love for all things green and pursued his passion at the University of Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ornamental Horticulture.

He followed in the family footsteps, working as a golf course superintendent for 10 years before taking on his current role as owner and president of Nature’s Way Landscaping and Tree Care in Hampshire.

“I wanted to help people enjoy their backyards, and that’s what I do,” Leuzinger said.

Recently, he was able to add another title to his resume after earning his Professional Arborist certification.

“We want to show that we’re here to stay,” said Leuzinger. “By having qualified people to do tree work and landscaping, we’re able to offer the full package.”

He took classes in the off season and passed an exam to become certified through the International Society of Arboriculture. The certification is valid for three years and can be renewed with continuing education.

“You never stop learning,” said Leuzinger. “Doing this is a challenge and shows we’re committed to what we do. All of this experience helps us create some unique outdoor spaces.”

This is Leuzinger’s fifth year as the owner of Nature’s Way. Before he took over it was primarily a tree care service. Now the company also does landscape design and installation, including water, lighting and stone accents.

“We have to be more versatile,” Leuzinger said. “With the economy changing and gas prices going up, I think people will stay at home and enjoy their homes and backyards more.”

Though he supervises a staff of five, Leuzinger is actively involved in each of his projects, from design to installation.

“I’m fortunate to have a great crew, but I also don’t mind getting dirty to make sure something is done the way I envision it,” he said.

His business card says Nature’s Way is family-owned and operated, even though his current staff is not related to him. He explains that, much like he did with his own father, his children are following in his footsteps and are already able, as adolescents, to understand and do some of the work involved.
